THOMPSON, Mike. THE LORD OF LORD'S : The life and times of Lord Frederick Beauclerk. Christopher Saunders Publishing Limited 2017. 8vo, pp215. Illustrations. Bound in cloth, in slipcase. New. This is one of the limited edition of 63 numbered copies, each signed by the author and the 14th Duke of St Albans. This is the first full-scale biography of a controversial but important figure in cricket's early history. He was the first great amateur cricketer and did not like to lose, so he occasionally resorted to what one might call "sharp practice". He has historically had a bad press. This biography attempts to paint a fair picture of a complex character who loved cricket. After his playing days ended he became President of MCC, and was described as "a sort of autocrat". The author has spent twenty years researching Beauclerk and his time, and includes many fascinating anecdotes about his contemporaries such as "Silver Billy" Beldham, Winchilsea and Osbaldeston. Although Beauclerk was a vicar he was involved with one of the 19th centuries most notorious courtesans, Harriette Wilson, who demanded money from all her lovers, with the promise that if they paid up they would be left out of her memoirs. Lord Frederick was one of those who refused to pay, as was the Duke of Wellington, with his famous retort "Publish and be damned". [ref: 86654]   £85.00 enquire
